Jumbling Towers — one of this city's most promising, if occasionally off-putting, indie bands — is finally ready to come out of its long hibernation. The band's carnivalesque keyboards, thumping rhythm section and Joe DeBoer's manic vocals are alternately beguiling and unsettling, but they're always worth checking out. Following an excellent debut CD and last year's download-only Classy Entertainment EP, the quartet is releasing its first seven-inch on the British label Half Machine Records. Borrowing the drumbeat from Gary Glitter's "Rock & Roll, Pt. 2," the hypnotic A-side "The Kanetown City Rips" finds DeBoer singing in a round while his Fender Rhodes provides an appropriately sing-songy melody. The B-side is more direct and memorable: "Gilberta" approximates a hip-hop beat played at the bottom of a well, as bright keyboard bursts and a fuzzy funk bass line provide the pulse and leave room for a scattered, cast-off guitar solo.
