Who says that reading is a lost art? Non-readers, perhaps, or maybe that's the kind of thing out of the mouths of folks who haven't attended the Big Read festival (314-863-0278 or www.bigread.net). This literary celebration, happening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the campus of Clayton High School (1 Mark Twain Circle), pays tribute to all things written, with author events, workshops for aspiring poets and writers, and activities for children. Greg Mortenson, author of the bestselling Three Cups of Tea, speaks about his inspiring book at 11:45 a.m. In addition, many other authors, local and otherwise, participate in the day, including Missouri poet laureate Walter Bargen (pictured) and Anne Byrn, the latter of whom honors reading (and eating) in the Viking Cooking School Author Tent when she speaks about and signs her book The Cake Mix Doctor Returns! For the kiddos there are craft opportunities, a magnetic poetry area, an "Are You Smarter Than a Librarian?" game and more. And inside classrooms at the high school, seminars are held on everything from how to self-publish a book to what you should read to write better. Admission to the Big Read is free, but note that books will be available for purchase, so go ahead and bring some cash.
