Tribute to Warren Zevon

9 p.m. Friday, October 23. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

When Warren Zevon died prematurely in 2003 at the age of 56, he left his listeners with a sheaf of funny, poignant and memorable rock & roll songs. With a combination of Randy Newman's biting wit and Tom Waits' bittersweet storytelling, Zevon could be raucous ("Werewolves of London"), tender ("The French Inhaler") or caustic ("Genius"), sometimes in the same song. Community radio station KDHX (88.1 FM) continues its series devoted to deceased, iconoclastic singer-songwriters (Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt have already had a turn) by inviting local acts to take a swing at Zevon's songbook. The evening, billed as Excitable Boys & Girls: A Tribute to Warren Zevon, will feature Bob Reuter, Tenement Ruth, the Brothers Lazaroff, Auset and Rough Shop, among others. Proceeds from the door benefit KDHX.
