Funny, Ha-Ha

Steven Wright is as atypical a comedian as you can imagine. With his morose delivery and downcast, almost uninterested eyes, Wright holds your attention without shouting, gesticulating or apparently even waking up. His is a most detached and minimalist approach to the art of generating laughter, one that relys on inventive wordplay and a sublime appreciation for the inane and surreal elements of life. He's essentially an observational comic, but rather than observing shampoo bottles and ad wizards he ponders the strange curlicues of fancy that crop up in his subconscious, such as what telephones would look like if our mouths weren't so close to our ears. Steven Wright performs his inimitable act at 8 p.m. at the Touhill Performing Arts Center (1 University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Tickets are $30 to $75.
