Mayday Parade

7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Mayday Parade has spent much of its nascent career associating itself with the contemporary emo scene: The band's been on Warped Tour, sold CDs out of its van, signed with teen-girl-centric label Fearless Records and toured with current pop-punk heartthrobs All Time Low. However, with the recent release of its major-label debut, Anywhere but Here, it's obvious the Florida quintet is focused on being a rock band. No, not the mind-numbing drivel "inspired" by Trapt and Staind you hear on a cramped stage in the back of O'Houlihan's on a Tuesday night (five-cent wings! dollar drafts!) — the kind of music you actually look forward to hearing on your local "extreme rock" radio station. Here's leadoff single, "The Silence," is a hell of a modern-rock single, worthy of more attention than it's getting. While the crowd at this show may be comprised primarily of screaming females, give it time — Mayday Parade are one WWE superstar's theme from blowing up in the dude-bro world in a big way.
