I See Stars

6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 17. Fubar, 3108 Locust Street.

How many screamo bands do you know that have a Grammy-winning rapper on speed dial? We can only think of one: The Warren, Michigan, sextet I See Stars. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony member Bizzy Bone drops in on "Sing This," one of eleven gloriously schizophrenic tracks on 3-D, the band's debut album. Amazingly, his flow isn't the strangest occurrence on the disc: I See Stars' sound bounces around like an ADD-addled fourteen-year-old hyped up on Pixy Stix, touching on screamo vocals, hardcore breakdowns, pounding synths, danceable electronica and straightforward rock. It makes absolutely zero sense and is obviously the product of a bunch of young kids unable to hone in on one or two distinct influences, which is what makes the band exciting. Hell, even its song titles directly reference pop culture. (Does "Save the Cheerleader" or "I Am Jack's Smirking Revenge" ring any bells?) With a sound this scattered, there's no guarantee I See Stars will even make it to LP No. 2 — so you might as well see 'em now, if for no other reason than morbid curiosity.
