Girl In a Coma

8:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 29. Cicero's, 6691 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

Girl in a Coma vocalist/guitarist Nina Diaz's voice owes its grandeur and dramatic flare to influences such as Morrissey and Björk, but it also possesses plenty of tough-girl, punk-rock fervor, à la Joan Jett. This makes sense: The San Antonio band is signed to Jett's Blackheart Records, and the veteran rocker adds backing harmonies to "Joanie in the City," a crunchy post-punk romp from GIAC's latest album, Trio B.C. However, the trio's range is even more impressive. "El Monte" is a hypnotic, '50s-style ballad about the blinding light of infatuation and the doubts that often accompany young love — and it's a refreshing, vulnerable song coming from someone who might be expected to always put on a tough-girl façade. The group's first all–Spanish–language song, "Ven Cerca," is B.C.'s real standout, though: With its '60s pop bounce, dissonant chords and quiet/loud dynamics, the tune could easily pass for a Pixies or Breeders outtake.
