Mousterpieces

Kids think they don't like classical music, but they just don't recognize that the music they like is in fact classical. Every tot seems to have a hoard of animated Disney DVDs, and guess what — most of those films' soundtracks lean heavily toward the classical end of the spectrum. Boom, misconception dispelled. David Robertson and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra celebrate the great hits of Disney's canon with the program The Magical Music of Disney. While the SLSO performs orchestral suites from favorites such as Tarzan, Hercules and The Rescuers Down Under (Bruce Broughton's rousing theme is an overlooked gem) while still images from the films are projected on Powell's big screen. The show is great introduction to the symphony for the younger set — just don't tell 'em they're listening to classical music until they start applauding. The Magical Music of Disney is performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (January 1 and 2) at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org). Tickets are $12.50 to $75.
