Shift Gears

Ms. Day is the proud owner of a sweet, three-speed Schwinn — she calls it her the Blue Beauty — and she wants to get out and about on her soon, but frankly, she doesn't know where to start. Sure, she's seen the bike lanes marked on various area roads, but there's certainly a lot more she should know. Good news: As long as Day brings her listeners and her lookers to the annual Midwest Bicycle Expo & Swap Meet, she should have plenty of information to take to the open road. With workshops on topics ranging from the Katy Trail to helmet fitting, and from biking with groceries to commuting by bike, this event will inform — and it'll throw in some fun, too, with indoor stationary racing, vendors and more. The expo is organized by the St. Louis Regional Bicycle Federation at the Gateway Center (1 Gateway Drive, Collinsville, Illinois), and it runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission costs $6 to $8; call 314-707-5001 or visit www.stlbikefed.org to learn more.
