So, Super Bowl Sunday — it can be avoided, you know. Just because the game is televised (for something like 71 hours) doesn't mean you have to watch it. Thomas Stockman offers an alternative with his inaugural Super Bowl Super-8 Movie Madness from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Way Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; 314-664-7638). Screening truncated versions (about fifteen minutes long) of unusual and obscure films is not just a hobby of his, it's a public service. As a nod to the unofficial holiday, five of the films on this evening's slate involve football: Black Sunday (Bruce Dern and his deadly blimp attack Super Bowl X) and Two-Minute Warning (a sniper stalks a Super Bowl-esque game and it's up to Charlton Heston and John Cassavettes to stop him) are dramatic thrillers; the Marx Brothers' Horse Feathers and the football scene from Robert Altman's M*A*S*H are pure comedy; Football Follies, a collection of gridiron bloopers, is tragedy. Also on the schedule are a double bill of Vincent Price classics, The Ravenand the Pit and the Pendulum and the soft-core delights of the original Emmanuelle. Admission is $2, and popcorn is free.
