Zing Go Those Strings

If you've been to a wedding, you're familiar with the string quartet. What you may not know is that the string quartet was not created to perform tasteful renditions of Journey's "Faithfully," but to provide music in places too cramped for an entire symphony orchestra couldn't fit. The string quartet is the original iPod, folks — get hip to it. The Saint Louis Symphony Chamber Concert Series, now in its tenth season, returns to the aesthetically pleasing Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park (4256 Magnolia Avenue; 314-286-4432 or www.slso.org) with a program of music for string quartet. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is free; get there early because seating is first come, first served, and Piper Palm House is a string-quartet size place, not a symphony-size one.
