More About

Nneka was born and raised in Nigeria. At age nineteen, she left the African country to attend college in Hamburg, Germany. While studying anthropology, she started making a name for herself as a musician and performer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, her U.S. debut album, Concrete Jungle, reflects both her African and European heritage. Hints of funk, reggae, Afrobeat, electro, hip-hop, folk and soul come together like a patchwork quilt, a genre pastiche anchored by Nneka's pure, honeyed voice. (Think a lighthearted Lauryn Hill.) She's opened for the Roots in the past — and so expect great things from this St. Louis show at the intimate Gramophone. Black Spade opens.
