Feel the Push

Author Sapphire first touched readers with her novel Push, which is written in the voice of Precious, an illiterate teen and victim of incest who is journaling as a means of coping with her terribly troubled past. More recent, Sapphire agreed to let the story of Precious be told through director Lee Daniels' film Precious released late last year. Starring Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique, the movie was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture of the Year. Now, St. Louisans have an opportunity to spend time with Sapphire herself and learn about her inspiration for writing Push when she lectures at 7 p.m. at the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Millennium Student Center (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). Attending this big-deal event is free, and getting there early would probably be a good idea. Call 314-516-5291 to learn more.
