Pattern is Movement/Via Audio

9 p.m. Thursday, March 4. The Billiken Club, 20 North Grand Boulevard, in the Busch Student Center on the campus of Saint Louis University.

Brooklyn-via-Boston pop outfit Via Audio recently took a breather from relentlessly touring alongside White Rabbits and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin to create its sophomore album, Animalore, which was produced by Spoon's Jim Eno. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia rock-opera lumberjack duo Pattern Is Movement has kept busy jamming with the Roots and collaborating with St. Vincent's Annie Clark. Together, both have generated enough buzz to power Jurassic Park's electric fences. However, any hype heaped upon either band is well justified: Animalore is the best feel-good party record since Timberlake went out of Sync, and Pattern's provocative post-punk makes for blissful records and irresistibly visceral live performances. While talk is cheap (and Billiken Club shows are free), rarely do bands this impressive on paper sound so stellar in reality.
