Monk's Music
Because the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is so adept at interpreting the classics, it's easy to forget that with David Robertson at the podium, this is a forward-thinking symphony. New music is the lifeblood of any body of musicians, and the SLSO is no different. Avant garde composer/vocalist Meredith Monk has been commissioned to create a new piece of music for voice and orchestra, and tonight at 8 p.m. at Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org), we all get a chance to hear what she's been up to. The piece, simply titled New Work at this point, requires human voices and the voices of the instruments to be woven together for 25 minutes. "The piece is about change, energy and a sense of vastness," Monk says in the notes for this evening's program, and if that doesn't get you excited, you should turn in your music lover credentials. Panda Chant II, a two-minute piece that serves as an excellent introduction to Monk's vocal innovations, and Night, a piece dedicated to all those who live their "lives in the midst of unspeakable violence and natural disaster," are also to be performed. The evening is most certainly going to move you. Tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime experience are $16 to $105.
