Sound in Motion
When dancers move to live music, bonus layers of creativity and clarity are added to the performance. Here's why: Viewers respond not only to what they see, but also to what they hear, and when that auditory component is performed live, it's all the easier to engage members of the audience — and encourage them to think about how the music relates to the piece onstage. Dancer and choreographer Dawn Karlovsky embraces live music with her upcoming contemporary dance concert, Suspended Realities, which is performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (March 12 and 13) at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue). Several works will be presented throughout the modern-dancy evening, including Closer, a piece that explores long-distance friendships, and Finding Space, which is all about just that. Both of these pieces will be presented with a live musical accompaniment: Tory Z. Starbuck sets the score for Closer, and cellist Tracy Andreotti plays along with an ambient track for Finding Space.
