If you have difficulty obtaining Past Lives' debut record, Tapestry of Webs, simply take a vinyl copy of Burn, Piano Island, Burn by singer Jordan Blilie's former band, the Blood Brothers, and play it at your turntable's slowest speed. Not only does this process tame the Brothers' oft-agitating guitar stabs down to Past Lives' breathable melodies, but it also emphasizes Blilie's strong midrange rather than milking his strained squeals. Still, this playback would only result in an approximation, as Past Lives is more than a lethargic reincarnation of its members' former projects. It's post-hardcore perfected: Abstract lyrics and demented melodies build linear tensions into visceral and vibrant explosions. Throw in Webs' occasional abrasive cello and vocal spazz-out, and Past Lives then emerges as the bratty bastard child of Les Savy Fav and Cursive.
