While the jam-band scene continues to flourish at home and abroad, the days of endless, guitar-based "explorations" may be coming to a close. Thanks to the scene's cultural and musical osmosis, more acts are using electronics to further their improvised, long-form jams. Instrumental quintet Sound Tribe Sector 9 has been at the forefront of this movement for the past decade, fusing electronic beats and MIDI-based technology to make music that locks in like funk but pulsates like IDM. The songs are less platforms for individual solos than they are exercises in groupthink, where rhythmic patterns, bass lines and synthesizer oscillations dip and dive as one.
