When the African Film Festival was first presented in St. Louis five years ago, we tend to think local folks were less aware of filmmakers from the faraway continent than they are now — and we have this small but satisfying fest to thank for our greater collective knowledge. If you missed last year's screenings (or even if you've missed them all), be sure to get caught up this weekend, when this national touring film fest makes a stop at Washington University with eight interesting feature films and documentaries in tow. Friday night (March 26) kicks off the weekend of screenings with a short documentary and a longer comedic feature, beginning at 7 p.m. In the former (Bronx Princess), a seventeen-year-old, embracing young adulthood, embarks on a finding-herself mission and leaves her mother and New York City behind to visit her father in Ghana. Then, Sex, Okra and Salted Butter tells the story (in French with English subtitles) of a traditional African husband and father who learns the truth about his family members, from his wife's affair to his son's love life. The screenings continue all weekend with two films showing at 1 p.m. Saturday, two at 7 p.m. Saturday night (including From a Whisper, based on the U.S. embassy bombing in Nairobi) and two at 7 p.m. Sunday (March 27 and 28).
