Sleepy Sun possesses rare and subtle qualities. The San Francisco psych-rock outfit embodies several different sonic personas, often within a single song. Take "Sleepy Son," from its debut release, Embrace. The song's loudest moments involve bluesy, stoner-esque, near-metal riffage that could compete easily with peers such as Black Mountain and the Black Angels. But the song's interludes are as delicate and echo-laden as onetime tourmates Fleet Foxes, and as spacey and blissed-out as the Stone Roses. Vocalist Bret Constantino moves effortlessly between a slow syrupy croon and ultra-high falsetto, making his singing reminiscent of Cat Power or My Morning Jacket's Jim James.
