Keep Watching the Sky

These past few nights — the ones without the rain — the stars have been sharp as diamonds. Are they really clearer in autumn and spring, or is just that we look up more often on pleasant nights? Whether it's a trick of the mind or a natural phenomenon, our celestial friends have been putting on quite a show lately. It's a good idea to get outside and enjoy them with the naked eye and with visual aids. The Saint Louis Astronomical Society and the Saint Louis Science Center sponsor a free telescope viewing tonight starting at 6:45 p.m. on the open field next to the James S. McDonnell Planetarium in Forest Park (Clayton and Faulkner drives; 314-289-4453 or www.slsc.org). Telescopes will be set up for your enjoyment, with expert guidance provided by experienced star gazers. And if tonight looks to be overcast, there are always indoor activities planned in the event of inclement weather.
