With All the Frills Upon It
With the arrival of pleasant weather (hopefully to stay this time), people are looking for reasons to linger outdoors. This being Easter weekend, why not get out for the Easter Parade? The free, outdoor film series Twilight Under the Train Shed returns to St. Louis Union Station (1820 Market Street; 314-421-6555 or www.stlouisunionstation.com) this evening at, er, twilight with Irving Berlin's musical about song-and-dance man Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) and his attempt to keep his career peaking with new partner Hannah Brown (Judy Garland). Don's last partner (Ann Miller) went solo and broke Don's heart in the process, so Don wants to keep things strictly professional this time around. Devotees of Berlin musicals no doubt recognize that plot as bearing more than a passing resemblance to his Holiday Inn; not too surprising, considering that the song "Easter Parade" was lifted entirely from Holiday Inn. And he did the same thing with the song "White Christmas" a few years later — only steal from the best, eh, Irving? Aw, who cares? You don't see too many frothy musicals about women parading in resplendent hats anymore, so take your chances when you get 'em. If the weather turns nasty, the film will be screened indoors.
