Hurricane Bells

8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

Hurricane Bells started as a post-tour wind-down for its founder, Steve Schiltz, who also fronts the band Longwave. Schiltz wrote and recorded the group's debut album, Tonight Is the Ghost, in his modest home studio with few expectations. But this was before the B-side "Monsters" caught the attention of The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz. The song made the soundtrack, and so Schiltz finds himself back on the road performing these mellow, echo-laden jams. Most of the songs bear little resemblance to Longwave's towering guitar-scapes: "Freezing Rain" gallops along on a very M. Wardian strum and delicate slide guitar introduction while the dense, hollow vocals of "I Can't Remember" recall My Morning Jacket.
