For years now you've been talking a big game to your friends about your pirate knowledge, dropping an enthusiastic "Aarrgghh!" into casual conversation, regaling them with tales about treasures and parrots, and generally making it sound as if a pirate's life is for you. Unfortunately, everything you know about these high-seas thieves you found out from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at Magic Kingdom. It's time you stepped up your knowledge and learned a few things from Real Pirates, the National Geographic exhibition that docks at the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4424 or www.slsc.org) on Saturday, May 1. Featuring rescued treasure and other artifacts from the Whydah, a slave-ship-turned-pirate-ship that sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717 only to be rediscovered in 1984. The exhibition educates visitors about the realities of the West African slave trade and piracy, and even allows folks to lay their hands on some authentic pirate coins. Admission to Real Pirates costs $12 to $16 — a small price to pay for better, bona fide pirate tales, wouldn't you say?
