Pearl Jam needs no introduction: Two decades into its career, the Seattle band is a ferocious, reliable rock act that's showing no signs of old age. The quintet's concerts continue to be hours-long affairs, complete with extended encores and choice covers. Last year's Backspacer, meanwhile, vacillated between vibrant, Who-style garage rock and midtempo, bar-band ballads (e.g., the type of tunes favored by vocalist Eddie Vedder when he performs solo). While many veteran acts who dabble in thrashing punk come across like dudes having a midlife crisis, Pearl Jam simply sounds young at heart. Opening act Band of Horses now resides in South Carolina but formed in Seattle in 2004. When compared to its first two albums, the band's forthcoming third album, Infinite Arms, feels like a hand-colored black-and-white film. Dainty, pastoral acoustic moments and hymn-like harmonies contrast with barnstorming rock buoyed by slicker production and stacked harmonies.
