Mattoon, Illinois' own Will Leitch — the man who bestowed Internet fame on Carl Monday, Dee Mirich and a deep bench of genius commenters via the controversial website Deadspin.com — is a birds-on-bats-wearing true fan of the baseball Cardinals. Through the prism of his beloved team, Leitch can see his father, Bryan, not as the old man but as another human being in love with the same things he loves: Whiteyball, Jack Buck, the perennial collapse of the Cubs. Baseball in its infinite glory provides a safe backdrop for father and son to actually share those tender feelings the two normally redirect toward raisins (Will) and Natural Light (Bryan). Tonight at 7 p.m., Will Leitch discusses his new book, Are We Winning? Fathers and Sons in the New Golden Age of Baseball, at Left Bank Books downtown (321 North Tenth Street; 314-463-3049 or www.left-bank.com) with the Post-Dispatch's Bernie Miklasz. The book is a collection of essays about the game both Leitchs love, and how the overflow of that love is what brings dads and sons together. Admission is free, and copies of Are We Winning? will be available for purchase.
