Stand Up (For) Comics

Fine artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein tipped their hats to comic books, but the source of their inspiration was rarely viewed as anything other than trashy, disposable entertainment. These days, any trip to the cineplex makes it clear that comics' cultural influence has never been greater, but in addition to the pop-culture acclaim, comics themselves are finally receiving the artistic respect they've long deserved. You might not necessarily gather that from the title with which the Foundry Art Centre has saddled their latest exhibit. Bam! Pow! Zap!: Comic Art and Storyboarding harkens back to the campy impressions overly defensive comic academics have long been trying to escape, but the exclamations are well deserved now that the art world has come to recognize comics as a unique sequential art form. This pulse-pounding exhibit of comic and comic-influenced work busts wide-open with a free public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Foundry Art Centre (520 North Main Center, St. Charles; 636-255-0270 or www.foundryartcentre.org). Bam! Pow! Zap! remains up through Thursday, July 1; the gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 21. Continues through July 1, 2010
