Yes, the Most Serene Republic is a Canadian indie-rock collective. Yes, its albums are dense with trumpets and coed vocals. But unlike the simplistic tunes its peers hussy up in recording studios, the Most Serene Republic's prog-pop opuses weave through varied time and key signatures and burst into jubilant refrains. The resulting shards transform into disjointed melodies like enthusiastic jazz school dropouts nerding out over Pixies records. As if to further prove its ambition, the band's newest EP, Fantasick Impossibliss, is the inaugural release on its own label and seventh recording in as many years. Similar acts seem weighed down by the sum of individual members, but MSR uses its expansive lineup like an assembly line cranking out albums in the same amount of time it takes Broken Social Scene to finish a game of Hacky Sack.
