Earl Greyhound's mix of psychedelic sounds and swagger earned the trio's debut full-length, Soft Targets, plenty of critical praise. However, the LP might have unfairly pigeonholed the trio as a bunch of '70s classic-rock revivalists. Thankfully, Earl Greyhound's new album, Suspicious Package, exhibits more stylistic diversity and experimentation — without abandoning the soulful aesthetic, deep-pocketed grooves and smart riffs that have always served its sound so well. The album opens with a two-part opus, "The Eyes of Cassandra," which slowly builds from solitary, swaying jazz changes played on a Fender Rhodes to a pulsing, tribal drum break. It leads perfectly into the album's strongest track, the Santana-on-speed, Latin-inspired rocker "Oye Vaya."
