It's All Downhill from Here

It's too late to enter this year's St. Louis Jaycees' Soap Box Derby, and you're too old anyway; the race is open to boys and girls ages eight to seventeen only. But there's nothing stopping you from being a spectator — the 2010 race takes place at noon on Macklind Avenue at Southwest Avenue (www.aasbd.org) in the beautiful Hill neighborhood. Take a brief trip back to a time when parents and kids spent months building and customizing one of the gravity-powered racers for the camaraderie, and also the thrill of the race. Designate a good-looking car as your champion and then cheer the driver throughout the afternoon, but please, no wagering. Winners of today's race move on the All-American Soap Box Derby finals, held in Akron, Ohio, in July.
