Delta Spirit formed in 2005, after three San Diego friends (Jonathan Jameson, Brandon Young and Sean Walker) recruited the services of local busker Matthew Vasquez and began crafting soulful indie rock. Despite their locale, the men's music sounded decidedly not native to Southern California: Memphis soul, old-time country and gospel fervor, as well as Vasquez's stirring vocal performances, propelled the band's 2008 debut album, Ode to Sunshine. The group's new album, History From Below, hints at a slight shift toward a more pop-oriented sound, but it still conveys plenty of honest emotion and continues to spotlight Vasquez's conviction as a lead vocalist. Below's first single, "Bushwick Blues," is a head-bobbing pop song with well-placed guitar hooks, sweet vocal harmonies and perfectly building dynamics.
