Happy Birthday, America
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson and Betsy Ross got together and made a beautiful baby they named the United States of America, because they knew that monogram would look super sweet on both hockey jerseys and soccer kits. We commemorate their night of patriotic passion every year on the Fouth of July, except when the holiday falls on a weekend; in that happy case, the birthday party goes longer and later. Case in point: Fair St. Louis, St. Louis' traditional Independence Day celebration, which lasts from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday (July 3 and 4) at the Gateway Arch (707 North First Street; www.celebratestlouis.org). You're no doubt familiar with the live music (John Legend Saturday night and the B-52s on Sunday), the kids' activies and the riverboat races. What some of you younger folk may not recall is the air show, which is 90 minutes of precision flying by military and civilian pilots -- and after a much-lamented absence, the show's back on the program (tentatively scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. Sunday, although that may change). And then there are the famous fireworks over the river, which honor our country's founders with a bombastic (and sexy) series of escalating bangs. Admission is free, but you'll need money for food and drink.
