Much like fellow Philly kids Dr. Dog, Drink Up Buttercup specializes in fuzzy, sun-dazed pop goodness. The group's psychedelia runs in many different directions, however. The bouncy bass lines and druggy haziness of Born and Thrown on a Hook, the quartet's debut on Yep Roc, recalls the best Elephant 6 jams. Yet Drink Up Buttercup tosses in enough dark-tinted detours to stem the sugar rush: With Left Banke harmonies and Abbey Road drum fills, "Young Ladies" come off as a spot-on pastiche of '60s Baroque pop until you listen more closely to the lyrics, which state, "Put your hands together and pray that you don't lose your teeth." New Barsuk signee Maps & Atlases, with a new album called Perch Patchwork under its belt, headlines.
