Something stinks: Cops take aim at dogs (again) and complaints persist over E. coli in waterways

SEARCHING FOR THE MEANING OF "COMPLETE"
More work left to do: This is a great idea and bill — hands down ["Mayor Slay Signs 'Complete Streets' Bill," Aimee Levitt]. However, is South Grand Boulevard really "complete?" For one thing, the giant concrete rings block everything, including the bus stop, which makes for more traffic than before. This can hardly be considered complete. I like this idea, but it seems that more thought, or better yet, more action is needed.

SUNSCREEEN SCREED
Fifteen-minute solution: If you apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to going outside, you block the body's ability to absorb and process ultraviolet rays into vitamin D from the sun ["Sunscreen: Ur Doing it Rong," Aimee Levitt]. The average person needs approximately fifteen minutes of direct sunlight without sunblock. Even weak sunscreens block your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95 percent. The sunscreen industry doesn't want you to know that your body actually needs sunlight exposure. Even though vitamin D is one of the most powerful healing chemicals in your body, your body makes it absolutely for free. No prescription required.

BAD COP, BAD, BAD COP
Complete lack of judgment: I agree that Marcus Mays is not a sympathetic dog owner and that he shoulders the blame for allowing this incident to happen. ["Seen the Video Yet of Cops Shooting a Chained Dog in LaGrange, Missouri?" Chad Garrison] And while I do not fault the police, or any citizen, for shooting a dog to protect themselves, that clearly was not the case here. As evidenced by their actions — and not just the shooting — these two should not be cops.

Unjustified dogicide: The dog was detained and under control. There was never a reason to shoot it, let alone twice. If you notice, after the dog is shot the first time, it actually begins wagging its tail. That was why the pig had to shoot it again! Because it was still alive! This could have been handled properly and by the book — by taking the animal to animal control and having them euthanize the dog if it was such a danger. Cops. Are. Ridiculous.

DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER
Getting sick is inevitable: My husband and I live very close to Kiefer Creek and have been aware of the E. coli problem for more than a year ["Deep Doo-Doo," Nadia Pflaum]. We were informed of the elevated levels of E. coli by Steve Seyer, the man featured in the article. The information prompted my husband to write a letter to the Department of Natural Resources. The letter he received back stated that DNR did not consider Keifer Creek impaired based on the data they reviewed.

After reading the article, I drove by Kiefer Creek to see if the flimsy, convoluted sign they posted was stopping people from swimming in the creek. Instead, I found approximately 30 people swimming and wading in the creek, including many small children and two dogs. It's only a matter of time until someone gets extremely sick from the water in Kiefer Creek. I suppose that's what it will take for the Department of Natural Resources to respond and take real action. Who knows how many people (including my own children) he might have saved from illness. It is frustrating that citizens have to protect each other while the governing bodies and policymakers look the other way.

Errata
Last week in our rundown of the 2010 RFT Music Awards winners, we erroneously ran a photo of Kryptonite, a rapper who performed with Best R&B/Soul/Funk Solo Artist winner Lamar Harris at Harris' RFT Music Showcase set. The photo above is the real Lamar Harris. Also, in Ian Froeb's June 17 review of Al Waha Restaurant & Hookah Lounge we erroneously indicated that Riyad Alwadi was also the owner of Petra Café & Hookah Lounge; in fact, he sold the establishment last year. Additionally, we reported that hookah smoking was only available after the kitchen closes, when a separate section is available all day long.
