Fans of the demented Casiotone fantasies on the Unicorns' Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? couldn't have guessed that the band would eventually transmute its unhinged indie-pop daydreams into the mannered tropical pop of Islands. Nick "Diamonds" Thorburn and Jamie Thompson corralled their former band's Day-Glo pop songs into sea-breeze pastels on last year's Vapours, which rode on waves of Caribbean glam and lightweight electro jams. Sun-stroked beach music may be the lingua franca of indie rock these days, but Islands has always been a little too crafty to dumb it down: Vangelis keyboards, motorik rhythms and a healthy Eno jones add some sandy grit to Islands' parasol-bedecked cocktails.
