Since debuting in 2001 with the abrasive no-wave/punk-funk masterwork They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, Liars has defied pigeonholing. The LA-via-New York band thrives on dichotomies — its numerous EPs and five studio albums revel in staticky noise and tranquil silence, uneasy drone and ornate melody, drilling keyboards and organic instruments. This year's Sisterworld has haunting echoes of long-time electro-soul compatriots TV On the Radio, but songs such as the synth-zapped post-punk blurt "Scarecrows On a Killer Slant" thrash and burn like an exorcism. Liars' intensity dissipated in the cavernous amphitheater when it opened for Radiohead here in 2007, but expect a full-throttle attack in the cozier confines of the Firebird.
