Talking Loud, Saying Nothing
Much of the human experience is conveyed through language, but there are times when our capacity to communicate fails us. In Jenny Schwartz's drama God's Ear, Mel and Ted desperately need to process their grief about their son's impending death, but neither of them can really talk about what's about to happen — though that doesn't stop them from trying. The couple convey their shattered emotional state in wildly spiraling strings of words; the world around them warps to reflect their detachment, as the Tooth Fairy drops by to offer condolences and G.I. Joe acts as grief counselor. Echo Theatre Company presents God's Ear at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (July 30 through August 15) at Theatre 134 in Crestwood ArtSpace (Watson and Sappington roads, Crestwood; 314-225-4329 or www.echotheatrecompany.org).
