Warpaint is a quartet of Los Angeles broads that (luckily) defies the Katy Perry stereotype of California girls. The band isn't hot, it's dry ice — and it'll refreeze your Popsicle with one withering look. Warpaint jams psychedelic, or as psychedelic as breathy angels with a reverb hard-on can get. Which, it turns out, is pretty psychedelic: With drugged-out, three-part harmonies, raw guitar and slapdash instrumentation, the band's gauzy EP, Exquisite Corpse, is bone-chillingly beautiful. The supernal "Billie Holiday" comes complete with a shoegazey recitation of Mary Wells' "My Guy," while "Elephants" is driven by watery cacophony. Most of Corpse's tracks were written well before its release late last year — and so far, little is known about the band's upcoming full-length, which is due later this year on Rough Trade.
