So technology dominates your life? Try being in the military. U.S. forces are equipped with the most advanced technological fighting tools in history, but war still comes down to the human factor. Boots on the ground, faces flattened against it — real combat for infantry troops is about as glamorous as it ever was, which is to say, it isn't. A new book, Grunts: Inside the American Infantry Combat Experience, by University of Missouri-Rolla professor John C. McManus, examines ten critical battles over decades of American warfare from World War II through Iraq. His thesis is pretty blunt: It's the grunts who carry the day, not the Pentagon's IT shamans. McManus appears at 7 p.m. tonight at St. Louis County Library headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) to discuss his book, which will be available for purchase at the free event.
