Look Up!
The Gateway Arch (707 North First Street; 314-655-1700 or www.gatewayarch.com) has been a part of St. Louis' skyline for decades, offering us great views of our city and some lovely Fourth of July shots. However, the stars that shine above the Arch have been a part of our skyline for bazillions of years, guiding those at sea and helping to set a romantic mood for teenagers all over. With a special free event tonight, dubbed Gateway to the Stars, the National Park Service and the St. Louis Astronomical Society link up the Arch and the stars to provide you with a great view, times two. Washington University's Dr. Edward Guinness starts off the evening at 8 p.m. with his talk "What's New on Mars?" held in the Odyssey Theater under the Arch. Then at 9 p.m. folks will adjourn upstairs and outdoors to peer through telescopes set up by SLAS. Volunteers from the group will have the scopes trained on various night wonders, capping off an evening of big-picture learning and no small amount of fun.
