The next time you encounter a critic who uses the word "Afrobeat" in proximity with an indie-rock band that may have listened to Remain in Light a few times — or, more likely, drooled over the cash flow of Vampire Weekend — consider summoning the zombies to rip off his or her flesh. And if the foundational works of Fela Kuti aren't at hand, lay some Antibalas or Chicago Afrobeat Project on the sucker. The latter especially gets the whole range of the genre — the essential funk, jazz, juju, Afro-Cuban rhythms, licks, tones and improvisations — while remaining open to hip-hop and fusion in ways that refresh the band's necessary cultural appropriation. The CAbP's live show, often with dancers and always with horns, is simply massive.
