Taking cues from post-Pixies dynamic troubadours Sunny Day Real Estate and Static Prevails-era Jimmy Eat World, the Atlanta quintet O'Brother succeeds by accentuating dramatic contrasts. The band marries glowing celestial verses with eruptions of igneous rock. Vocalist Tanner Merritt contradicts reserved falsetto swoons with his menacing growl, and the group's workhorse ethic conjures analogies to Our Band Could Be Your Life touring machines while paving roads for next century's lifers. The greatest testament to O'Brother's ominous indie rock may lie in the company it keeps; the band just wrapped up a run of dates with Circa Survive and is preparing for treks with Look Mexico and the Dear Hunter. Luckily, it will arrive at the Firebird with the Felix Culpa in tow. The Chicago/Milwaukee quartet's Midwestern sensitivities recall the early days of Cursive and Braid.
