A Life in Pictures
"The Mississippi is well worth reading about. It is not a commonplace river, but on the contrary is in all ways remarkable." Mark Twain wrote that in the 1880s, and his understatement was never more perfectly pitched. The Mississippi always inspired Twain's best, most deathless prose, an evergreen American song of praise. But a river can be hymned in images, too. In 1993 photographer Quinta Scott began documenting the Mississippi using a large-format camera. She photographed the waterway's entire length, from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, then selected 200 of those color shots for her sumptuous book The Mississippi: A Visual Biography. Scott appears tonight at 7 p.m. at St. Louis County Library headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) to share her adventure and sign copies of the book. The event is free.
