Contrary to the squeaky-clean and cute image perpetrated by their eponymous TV show, the four individual Monkees were actually tortured artists. At least that's the image they triumphantly create in their cult-classic film, Head. Sick of being packaged as a commodity, tired of not having control over their musical output and maybe just a little bit high, Peter, Mike, Davy and Micky gleefully destroy every preconceived notion one might have believed about the Prefab Four with a wit that ranges from zany to mordant. Consumerism, commercialism and the con game that is stardom are all deconstructed in a loosely linked series of skits, vignettes and one-liners that together expose the dark secret of America: Just because the TV sold you something doesn't mean what you bought is real, or even worthwhile. A script cowritten by young Jack Nicholson and cameos from Annette Funicello to Frank Zappa further sweeten an already sweet pot.
