A Horse Isn't A Horse
How solid is the line between sanity and madness, and who draws it? Such are the questions raised in Equus, the 1975 Tony Award winner for Best Play. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart struggles with disillusionment in his work as he repeatedly counsels troubled youths back into normal but seemingly purposeless lives. He then encounters Alan Strang, a teenager who has committed a disturbing and violent crime against six horses, and through their counseling sessions the play explores themes of religion, conformity and societal pressure. The production involves nudity and is not for children younger than eighteen. HotCity Theatre presents Equus at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday (September 9 through 25), and at 7 p.m. Sunday (September 12 and 19) at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard).
