Wolf Eyes

9 p.m. Saturday, September 11. Apop Records, 2831 Cherokee Street.

Wolf Eyes was recently name-checked (albeit clumsily) by New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones in his (even clumsier) intro to noise music. In fact, the Michigan trio was declared "an actual noise band" — as if its back catalog, milelong list of side projects and collaborations, and murderous, ear-shredding sound didn't tip us off. Wolf Eyes is perhaps the nicest bunch of good-time guys ever to write a song about drowning in roaches. The band is responsible for more than 100 releases in its decade-plus career — which run the sonic gamut from avant-garde and flux-capacitor noise to razor-edged drone. Industrial music used to be all about pain and vague politicized pouting, and the current crop of noiseniks would rather party. But Wolf Eyes is a different breed, having honed its mastery of texture and dynamics to a level simply out of reach of today's common angsty pedal-pusher.
