One could argue that sexism has been an unfortunate undercurrent in popular music since time immemorial, in both lyrical content and the sex-sells packaging of modern starlets. But while women have a sizable share of the country-music world and a respectable place at rock & roll's table, the hip-hop scene still struggles with outmoded models of macho posturing and sexist rhetoric. Taking its name from the deathless Destiny's Child jam, Nirit Peled's 2009 documentary Say My Name encourages female MCs and R&B singers to discuss the roles of gender and class in their respective genres. This globetrotting doc features such superstars as Erykah Badu and Jean Grae as well as several up-and-comers. Say My Name screens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is $5 to $6.
