Smile for the Birdy

What good artists do is continually reintroduce us to a bedrock reality subsumed beneath the contemporary strata of noise, distraction, and visual and cognitive static. Michael Johnson reminds us how very beautiful the Midwest often is in his dramatic large-format black and white landscape photography; take in his work and you'll have even less time for those oblivious types who dismiss Midwestern terrain as being boring or featureless. Jerry Breakstone crafts ceramic and wire sculptures of the creatures with the best perspective on this native splendor: birds. Pair these artists and you have a ready-made thematic union called Bird's Eye View, a joint exhibit opening with a free public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, September 25, at phd Gallery (2300 Cherokee Street; 314-664-6644 or www.phdstl.com). The work remains on display through Saturday, November 6, and the gallery is open Thursday through Sunday.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 25. Continues through Nov. 6, 2010
