These Colors Don't Run...They Bleed
How did we as a nation come from the Universal horrors of Dracula and the Wolf Man to the torture porn of Saw and Hostel? The documentary Nightmares in Red, White and Blue traces the evolution of the American horror film, from Thomas Edison's silent Frankenstein to the radiated giants of 1950's drive-ins and on through to the slice-and-dice slashers of today. Narrated by Lance Henriksen and featuring commentary from a revolving cast of talking heads such as John Carpenter, George Romero and Joe Dante, Nightmares also exposes enthusiasts to films they may have overlooked, such as producer Val Lewton's seminal Cat People and the Edgar Allen Poe pictures made by Roger Corman and Vincent Price. Nightmares in Red, White and Blue screens at 9 p.m. tonight in Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
