In the '80s, D.R.I. did as much as any band to obliterate the wall between hardcore and metal. The old-school crossover kings haven't put out an album since 1995, but they're playing like they haven't missed a step. D.R.I. is short for Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, which was but one of the pet names that frontman Kurt Brecht's father had for the young punks who once practiced in his Texas house. The band moved to California and mellowed a little: Its songs grew from twenty-second hyperblasts to five-minute chugging riffathons. A comeback tour in 2006 was scrapped when guitarist Spike was diagnosed with cancer. Now he's recovered and D.R.I. is reunited and promoting a remastered, expanded reissue of 1987's seminal-but-uneven Crossover LP.
